BUILDER

TRACK AND FIELD

CLASS OF 1989

Archie Green was Athletic Director at Kennedy Collegiate Institute for 32 years and a major proponent of track and field in Windsor-Essex. Most notably, Green founded and coached the Windsor Track Club and Windsor Legion Olympic Club and introduced wrestling and cross-country to WSSA.

Green was born in Windsor on March 14, 1915.

A successful basketball player in his youth, Green was a First Team All-City selection while playing for Kennedy Collegiate in 1935. During World War II, he won the Ontario Basketball Championship playing for the RCAF Trenton Flyers.

In 1949, during his time as Athletic Director at Kennedy, Green began the Kennedy Relays. Inaugurated at Windsor Stadium, the meet attracted participants from Ontario and Michigan and endured at the time of Green’s induction into the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame.

Green won seven Canadian Titles with the Windsor Legion Olympic Club, including the Midget and Juvenile titles in 1960. His Windsor Track Club team won the 1954 Midget, Juvenile, and Junior crowns and the ’59 Midget and Juvenile titles.

At Kennedy, where he also won a WSSA Junior Basketball Championship, his track and field teams won numerous team and individual titles at the WSSA and WOSSA levels.

Green also enjoyed a spell as coach of the University of Windsor Track and Field team.

Following his career at Kennedy, Green proudly promoted Windsor’s teams and athletes via a twice-daily CBC Radio broadcast for 11 years in the 1950s and ‘60s. He also founded an annual age-class track and field meet that was later run by the Knights of Columbus.

Archie Green passed away on September 1, 2006 at the age of 91.
