Brittany was drawn to sports at an early age. With a combination of her late grandmother’s love in sports, depicted through her father, as well as her late grandfather, Bernard Newman (Inducted 1991 Athlete: Gymnastics), she loved being involved in any sport she could. Her older brother Ryan was involved in numerous sports, especially including basketball, where he taught her how to “be tough” on and off the court.

Early in her basketball career, it was clear to all Brittany Hedderson was a force to be reckoned. The five-foot-nine guard for St. Anne’s high school had an impressive career from 2004-08 playing under coach Andy Kiss. Due to her mentorship from Kiss, Brittany was involved three years on the Ontario Provincial basketball team competing for a Canadian National Championship. She was named the first-team All-Canadian and Miss Basketball Ontario in 2008. She was the sixth player to win the Royal Arcanum award twice in her career. The three-year St. Anne’s captain led the team to gold at the OFSAA AAAA basketball championships in 2007. She also holds the school record for points in a game with 39.

In 2008, her hard work paid off when she signed with the University of Buffalo. During her first year in Buffalo she played all 32 games for the Bulls making 11 starts and led the team with 106 assists and 43 starts. In 2009 she was second on the team in scoring with an 11.9 average and led the team in scoring in three games.

By the end of her University career, Hedderson had left her mark on basketball. She was first-team All Mid-American conference selection. She had a career year as a senior for the Bulls finishing second in the league in scoring at 20.4 points per game. For her career, she finished fourth in scoring (1,462), fourth in field goals (555), third in three-point field goals (161) and eighth in assists (311). She ends her career as one of only two players in school history to record 1,400 points and 300 assists. Within her javelin abilities, she also competed for Buffalo for two years, winning 4th and 3rd during her time at Buffalo at their conference championships.

In 2012, Hedderson decided to take basketball to the next level, and was granted the privilege with being invited to the WNBA Combine in Denver, Colorado. From there, she signed with M&K Sports and Entertainment, where there she signed for one season in Thailand, and continued that year by signing with Turku Riento, a professional basketball team in Turku, Finland. Sadly after one season, Hedderson headed home after a torn Achilles tendon sidelined her.

Brittany could not stay away from basketball and could not have that as her ending story. She was approached by her mentor in Kiss in 2013 to be his Associate Head Coach for the St. Clair College Saints, where that year they finished 3rd at OCAA Provincials, all while training to return for one more season professionally. Her resilient recovery landed her a final season in 2014 with Tampree Pyrinto in Tamperee, Finland, where she finished out her final season.

She returned to coach one last season with Team Ontario, where after she then decided to further her education in her beloved hometown of Windsor, and currently is finishing her last semester of her Master of Business Administration.

Arguably one of the strongest female basketball players to come out of the Windsor-Essex area, Brittany Hedderson deservedly enters the Windsor / Essex County Sports Hall of Fame as one of the class of 2017 inductees in the athlete category.
