Stan Korosec was among the most dominant figures in the history of local high school basketball and one of the greatest players to ever don a University of Windsor Lancers basketball jersey.

Born and raised in Windsor, Korosec took to the game at a young age. He was already a phenomenon in local basketball circles by the time he attended his first class at F. J. Brennan Catholic High School. In high school, Korosec was a five-year starter for the Senior Cardinals, which was an unprecedented feat then and still would be today. Remarkably, Korosec was a First Team All-City selection as a freshman. Over the next four seasons, the skillful scorer and rebounder led the perennially top-ranked Brennan team. He was a regular presence on the WSSA All-City team.

After graduation, Korosec ventured west to Simon Fraser University in British Columbia on a basketball scholarship. However, the Windsorite soon realized that his true calling was to play for his hometown Lancers. Korosec returned home and spent a season with the Windsor AKO Fratmen, which he led to a Canadian Men’s Championship. Korosec won the Tournament MVP and Most Outstanding Defensive Player awards in the process.

The following season, Korosec began what became a storied four-year career with the University of Windsor. As the backbone of the great Lancer teams of the late 1970s and early ’80s, Korosec became known as Windsor’s “Chairman of the Boards,” as he regularly led the OUAA in rebounding and ranked among the circuit’s top scorers.

Korosec was a perennial OUAA First Team All-Star and was twice named All-Canadian. At the time of his induction into the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame, he remained the OUAA’s fourth all-time rebounder and 17th all-time scorer. Ultimately, Korosec was a game-changer during Windsor’s “golden age” of high school basketball. That he was able to extend his reputation during his collegiate career with the Lancers only cements his importance to local basketball history.
