Hubert “Bert” Lacasse was known as Tecumseh’s “Mr. Baseball” for his many contributions as a player, coach, manager, and club president.
Lacasse was born in Tecumseh on January 11, 1918.
A son of Senator Gustave Lacasse, he attended the University of Ottawa, where he played on the 1939 Canadian Intermediate Championship Basketball Team alongside his brother Maurice.
Lacasse was President of the Tecumseh Green Giants Baseball Club. He won the 1950-51 Essex County Senior Baseball Championship as Manager of the club. Between 1950 and ’59, he served as President of the Essex County Senior Baseball League.
A bronze bust of Lacasse is displayed proudly at the Bert Lacasse Recreation Centre. It reads: “A man of high ideals and dedication, a community leader, a helping hand for all organizations in need. For this we all thank him.”
Herbert Lacasse passed away in 1977.
