Chris Lori was a world-class bobsledder who competed in four Olympics between 1988 and 1998, notably finishing in fourth place at the 1992 Games in Albertville. He also won the 1990 Overall World Cup Championship. Lori was an All-Canadian track and field star in his youth and competed in the decathlon for the Canadian National Track and Field Team.

Lori was born in Windsor on July 24, 1962.

Lori split his high school years between F. J. Brennan and Toronto Windsor Churchill. His well-rounded track and field performances earned him a track scholarship to Mississippi State University, where he competed in the decathlon.

Following his freshman year in Mississippi, Lori opted to return to Canada, where he enrolled at the University of Western Ontario. There, he received All-Canadian honours in the pole vault, hurdles, and long jump and earned himself a place on the Canadian National Track and Field Team as a decathlete.

Lori took up bobsleigh in 1984 and fully committed to it in the following year. He enjoyed a 15-year career in the sport, during which time he competed regularly and won an impressive 22 medals on the World Cup Circuit.

In 1987, Lori experienced a terrible crash in Cervina, Italy while sledding down a track that has since been closed due to its dangerous injury rate. He broke two ribs, his clavicle, and his nose and suffered severe lacerations that required skin grafting on his face, shoulder, hands, and thigh. Fortunately, he recovered in time to qualify for the Calgary Olympics one year later.

In 1990, Lori’s team returned to the site of the injury to compete in what was the second-last World Cup race of the year. Lori and his teammates set the track record and went on to win the year’s final World Cup race, held in Calgary. Lori’s team won the Bobsleigh Overall World Cup four-man championship for the 1989-90 season. They were the first non-Europeans to do so.

Overall, Lori achieved 58 top-five finishes in World Cup competition. He won 12 Canadians Championships and collected nine Crystal Globes, which are awarded each year to the bobsledders who finish the competitive calendar in the top three positions of the World Cup standings.

Lori competed at the Olympic level in Calgary (1998), Alberville (1992), Lillehammer (1994), and Nagano (1998). His performance in the four-man event at the 1992 Games remains the highlight of his career. Lori’s team finished in fourth place, missing a bronze medal by .01 seconds.

Lori later became the coach of the American Bobsleigh Team for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, where its four-man teams took home silver and bronze.

As of 2015, Lori is currently a registered Commodity Trading Manager and consultant who regularly speaks publicly on the foreign exchange environment.
