ATHLETE

FOOTBALL

CLASS OF 2016

Brett Romberg is one of the finest football players Windsor and Essex County has ever produced, and certainly one whose career included some of the highest accolades achievable in NCAA college football.

A gifted multi-sport star while attending Belle River District High School, where he led the Nobles to a WECSSAA football championship in 1995, Brett would forge an All-Canadian junior career with the Windsor AKO Fratmen and was a vital part of their 1999 Canadian junior national championship team. His exploits in Canadian junior football earned Brett a full-ride scholarship to the University of Miami, at a time when the Hurricanes were re-establishing themselves as an NCAA division one powerhouse. In three years as the Hurricanes’ starting centre Brett anchored an offensive line that is generally regarded as one of the greatest in U.S. college football history. He never allowed a quarterback sack while spearheading three 1,000 yard rushers and leading Miami to 35 wins and the 2000 BCS National Championship. Brett rose to the top of the college football pyramid his senior season when he was named winner of the Dave Rimington Trophy, awarded to the player considered to be the best center in college football, and a unanimous All-American. Brett’s talent and unrivaled work ethic landed him a spot in the National Football League after graduating from Miami. During an exceptional 9-year career in the NFL, he would play with the Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams and Atlanta Falcons.

For an Essex County native, Brett Romberg reached near unthinkable levels of excellence in U.S. College and professional football and remains the only local athlete who can say he was part of an NCAA division one national championship football team. In 2014, Brett was rightly honoured by the University of Miami with induction into the Hurricanes’ Athletic Hall of Fame. It is just as right that he now takes his place among our region’s gridiron greats, in the Windsor / Essex County Sports Hall of Fame, in the Athlete category.
