RUSSELL

ATHLETE

TRACK AND FIELD

CLASS OF 2015

Scott Russell is one of the most decorated Canadian javelin throwers in the history of the sport. He still holds the Canadian distance record in the event.

Born and raised in Windsor, Russell excelled at every sport he played, capping a star-studded basketball, football, and (especially) track and field career at F.J. Brennan High School with back-to-back Royal Arcanum Awards as the local prep scene’s top male athlete. Along the way, Russell carved out an incredible record in the track and field throwing events, particularly in javelin, winning four consecutive OFSAA gold medals while establishing new Canadian youth records in the event. He matched these accomplishments in the summer while part of the Windsor Legion Track Club, winning or placing in numerous national and international competitions.

Russell accepted a full-ride offer to the University of Kansas, where he made an immediate impact on the Jayhawks program, breaking the school’s 28-year-old record in the 35-pound weight event and winning the Big 12 javelin title as a freshman. Russell met with similar National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) successes over the next three years and, by graduation, was figuring prominently in the international ranks. After fully committing himself to qualifying for the Olympic Games, Russell went on to win a silver medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, finish 12th at the 2005 World Championships, finish 8th at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, and, in 2008, become an Olympian. He represented Canada at the Beijing Summer Olympic Games, finishing tenth amongst the greatest throwers in the world. Along the way, Russell established a new Canadian record for javelin throw at 84.81 metres – a mark that still stands today.

Richly deserving of membership in the Athletes Category, Scott Russell enters the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2015.
