Rose Daley was a star soccer player in the 1990s. She enjoyed a historically significant career at the University of Hartford before moving on to represent Canada and play professional soccer in Europe and Asia.

Daley was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on March 19, 1971. She was adopted by a Canadian aunt at 10 years of age and moved to Windsor to live with her.

Daley attended Victoria Public Elementary School, and Kennedy Collegiate Institute, where she starred in several sports between 1985 and ’90. Daley played basketball and badminton, but her strongest sporting successes came on the track, where she qualified for OFSAA in the 100-metre and 400-metre races, and the soccer field.

A three-time All-City selection in soccer, Daley led Kennedy to the City Championship in 1989 while playing club soccer for the Windsor FC Nationals. Her performances earned her a full-ride athletic scholarship from the University of Hartford, Connecticut, an NCAA Division I school.

Daley excelled during her three-year stay at Hartford, helping the school to three consecutive North Atlantic Conference Championships. Buoyed by Daley’s goals and assists, Hartford reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 1991 and semifinals in ’92.

Daley was consistently recognized as one of the country’s finest players during her collegiate career. Most significantly, she was nominated for the Hermann Trophy for National Player of the Year in 1991 and ’93. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America selected Daley as a Second-Team All-American during each of her three years of NCAA play, and she was also a First-Team All-New England All-Star, a First-Team All-Region Northeast All-Star, and a First-Team All-North Atlantic Conference All-Star in every year of eligibility. In ’92, she was selected to the Adidas Scholar-Athlete All-American 2nd-Team. In ’93, Daley was a Missouri Athletic Club nominee for Player of the Year and the Soccer News East Region MVP.

At the time of her graduation, Daley ranked third all-time at Hartford in career goals (50), assists (23), and points (123).

After graduation, Daley played for the Canadian National Team for the first time at the 1993 World University Games. Canada placed ninth in the field of 12 countries at the Games, that year held in Hamilton and Buffalo.

In 1994, Daley moved to Scandinavia to play for UMEA in the Swedish Professional League. She recorded 20 goals in 20 games as UMEA finished in third place.

The following year, she played in the 10-team Japan Professional League for Fujita Mercury in Tokyo. Daley assisted on the winning goal as the team won the All-Japan Tournament.

Daley returned to Windsor in 1996. She coached Senior Girls Soccer at Forster and continued to play amateur soccer as a member of the Eastside Kickers.

In 1999, she returned to Japan, where she spent two years teaching English in Kyoto. Daley returned to Canada in 2001. At the time of her induction, she resided in Toronto, where she worked in the accounting department of a large corporation. After marrying and changing her named to Rose Sangster-Daley, she was taking courses through the Certified Management Accountant Association to acquire a CMA certification.
