TAYLES

ATHLETE

FOOTBALL

CLASS OF 2021

Brad Tayles is an example of a gifted multi-sport local athlete that found success on the larger, American stage.

His athletic journey began at Riverside Secondary School, starring in baseball and football. Tayles was starting shortstop and a key member of the 1987 Team Canada Youth Baseball Team that secured a bronze medal at the World Junior Tournament hosted in Windsor. The following year, at the World Under 9 Youth Baseball Series in Sydney Australia, he was the team’s starting third baseman. Tayles’ impressive baseball talents drew the attention of scouts as he was drafted into the Major Leagues by the New York Yankees.

While highly skilled when it came to the game of baseball, it would be football where he would leave his mark on the record books. Tayles received a full ride scholarship to Western Michigan University, a NCAA Division I school, as Quarterback. He won the Broncos’ starting quarterback job as a freshman despite the presence on the roster of four other quarterbacks. It is a position he held for the next four years (1989 to 1992).

His collegiate career was baptism by fire. His debut was at the Orange Bowl Stadium against the powerhouse Florida State Seminoles and Heisman Trophy winner, Charlie Ward.

Tayles led the Mid-American Conference in pass completions in 1990 and pass attempts in 1990 to 1992. Etched in the records of Western Michigan University, Tayles has a career passing record of 8,717 yards, 663 pass completions and 49 career touchdown passes.

Tayles known for his athletic instincts and tremendous poise under pressure, was the only Canadian who started and played quarterback for 4 consecutive years at a Division One NCAA College.

Among his honours he was Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year in 1989 and in the same year Sporting News named him All American Freshman Quarterback.

In addition to his many school records at Western Michigan, Tayles has the distinction in the NCAA record books of having 1 more total career yardage than John Elway. Brad Tayles a top quarterback to come from this area is a worthy induction into the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame as an Athlete
