Nick Weslock was a highly regarded golfer who won multiple individual and team titles in Canada and abroad. At his career peak in the 1960s, Weslock was considered to be Canada’s greatest ever amateur golfer.

Weslock was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on December 13, 1917. He moved to Windsor with his family at seven years of age and attended Sandwich and Windsor-Walkerville High Schools.

As a young boy, Weslock caddied for the great Walter Hagen at Essex Golf & Country Club.

In his teens and early twenties, Weslock won the Essex-Kent Amateur Golf Championship four times in five years (1936, ’37, ’38, and ’40).

In 1945, he finished as the top amateur at the Canadian Open, which was won that year by the great golfer Byron Nelson. One year later, he was ranked as Canada’s number two amateur golfer.

Weslock won greater than 400 golf tournaments over the course of his competitive career, including, between 1948 and 1952, Weslock won a total of five Ontario Amateur and Open titles. Weslock won the Canadian Amateur Championships in 1957, ’63, ’64, and ’66, which each time won him entry into the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, one of the sports four major championships.

In 1962 and ’64, Weslock finished second at the World Amateur Championship.

Weslock’s seven Ontario Open titles and eight Ontario Amateur Championship victories are both records. At the professional Canadian Open, Weslock finished as low amateur on a record 16 occasions. He was low amateur at four consecutive Ontario Opens between 1962 and ’65.

Weslock frequently represented Canada in international competition. From 1952 to 1978, Weslock golfed on 17 Canadian international teams and a record 25 interprovincial Willingdon Cup teams. He participated on four occasions in the Eisenhower Cup, the world amateur team championships for golf. He also represented Canada in seven Americas’ Cup competitions, which pit American, Canadian, and Mexican golfers against each other. In 1965, Weslock’s Canadian team won our only Americas’ Cup championship trophy. Finally, he played on four Commonwealth Cup teams.

In his later years, Weslock won 6 Canadian Seniors Titles from 1973 to 1983. Despite having both hips surgically replaced, he also won 11 Ontario Seniors Titles, including six consecutive titles at on point.

Weslock was induced into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and the Royal Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1971.
