Walkerville Chicks 1929 Ontario Senior Baseball Champions

The Walkerville ChicksTeam of 1929 had an 18-2 record, winning 13 games without a loss to teams, from Galt, St.Thomas, Niagara Falls,and Toronto. In competition with Michigan and Ohio teams their record was 5-2. Vern DeGeer, Sports Columnist for the Border Cities Star wrote, “A record that compares with anything any Canadian Senior AmateurTeam has been able to place in books in years”.

There was no National Amateur Baseball Championship in 1929. However, the Board of Directors agreed that the Walkerville Chicks, the Senior Ontario Baseball Champions were deserving and should be honoured for their contribution to our sports heritage.

The sponsor of the team was Thomas D. Chick, Manager Gordie Fuller, and Coach Tony Dugray. The players and coaches were Horace Atkin, ‘Boots’ Bouteiller, Bill Burnie, Silva ‘Rhino’ Cardinal, ‘Red’ Collins, Dave Dalton, AI Edwards, L ‘Spear’ Caneghie, Charlie Gatecliffe, Leo ‘Tatters’ Girard, Noah Jubenville, Tel Johnson, Bill Jordan, Dave Kay, Clarence Kennedy, Eddie Marchand, Edemo Ouellette, Leo Poupard, Dutch Schuchard, Jimmy Stewart, Herb Smith and Jack Smith.
